Reach Initiative
33 refugee camps in the upazilas of Ukhiya and Teknaf in Cox's Bazar district, Bangladesh (with Kutapalong Registered Camp the only exception due to ongoing security concerns). 70 tubewells were found and tagged during the coding that do not fall within the boundaries of the refugee camps. These tubewells were included in the dataset.
Tube Well
Camps were broken down into 100 x 100m grid squares. REACH enumerators conduced systematic transect walks through each square, navigating using the Maps.Me software installed on smartphones. For each tubewell encountered, a yellow label was physically applied. This label contains a barcode, the numerical version of the barcode (serving as the unique identifier code in this database), and in most cases a label code. After applying a label, Garmin GPS devices were used to collect GPS coordinates to 3 meter accuracy. Information was then collected on the basic attributes of each tubewell, including functionality and a short sanitary survey was carried out to assess risk for contamination. Each grid square was checked again after initial completion in order to minimise the possibility of missing any tubewells.
Data collection took place during 9 April - 1 July 2019.
