Water Point Data Exchange

iDE_Ethiopia_2020

Final Project Evaluation Explanations: The water samples for the Arsenic & E.coli tests were collected in June 2020, which is the rainy season in Wolaita. Due to excessively rainy conditions, one of our 8 water points - located in Duguna Fango woreda (Warazara Lash kebele) -was inaccessible by foot so our team was unable to collect data on this point for Annex10. Moreover, due to the cloudy and rainy weather that impeded signal, we were unable to record GPS data for the Gale (in Warbira kebele of Damot Pulasa woreda) and Amba (in Sere Beleka kebele of Kindo Kosha woreda) water points. The team reattempted to collect the missing data but were unable to travel to the project areas due to frequently occurring popular unrest and instability in the zone, as well as restrictions imposed by increasing COVID -19 incidences. Moreover, at one of the water points Mado Ketena, E.coli counting (test result) was 1/100ml. The water source is the same for three water points in Damut Pulasa woreda. However, E. coli appears (1/100ml) only on samples collected from Mado Ketena water point, indicating that the problem was only at the water point; it was not from the water sources. In response to this, iDE have been in constant contact with the Zonal Water Resources Department at Wolaita zone and learnt that they have notified Damot Pulasa woreda relevant offices and the people to take the recommended mitigation measures that include boiling the water before use, and applying other water treatment methods. Besides, there is a small reservoir at this water point site; therefore, the project discussed with the responsible bodies to treat the reservoir water before allowing the community to use it.
